The Secret Garden- It is a Kind of Magic

A friend recently said something along the lines of “Fairy tales were meant for adults, but, over time, the stories were watered-down and retold as stories for children.” I found The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett to be one such book.

The Secret Garden begins on a rather sad, gloomy note, however, things get better. What’s worse is that they keep getting better. The positivity in the book made me so nauseous that I wanted to throw away my phone in disgust (I was reading the book on the Kindle app). I found myself almost wishing for characters to suffer some trauma, even death. Anything, but this miserable happiness. Maybe, I have watched a little too much of Game of Thrones.  Thanks a lot, GRRM!

In the book, Mary, Collin and Dickon- the three central characters – believe that they can rebuild the Secret Garden. There is a long story of how Collin’s mother was really into gardening and how she dies while giving birth to Collin. Archibald Craven, Collin’s father is a gloomy little man, who shuts up the Garden and refuses to see his son because both- the Garden and Collin- remind him of his lost love. As a result, the Garden and Collin suffer neglect and wither away. Read the summary of the book, here.

The children find solace in each other’s company. They not only hope for a better future, but actively work to achieve their dreams. They tend to the Garden and in the process, find meaning in life. And, yeah, they start believing in “Magic.”

Is God a concept that humans have invented to explain away our shitty choices in life? Or, maybe there is something- a kind of unexplained phenomenon- a Magic, if you may- that guides us through our darkest times and leads us to the light.

Pick up the book if you are looking for positivity. Personally, I wouldn’t re-read it, given the over-the-top sweetness dripping from each page and all that la-di-dah about “Magic.”

Apologies for the sad review. Click here for the song- A Kind of Magic by Queen. It has the same concept, more or less, but in the awesome voice of Freddie Mercury.

Lyrics:

A Kind Of Magic

It’s a kind of magic,

It’s a kind of magic,

A kind of magic,

One dream, one soul, one prize,

One goal, one golden glance of what should be,

It’s a kind of magic,

One shaft of light that shows the way,

No mortal man can win this day,

It’s a kind of magic,

The bell that rings inside your mind,

Is a challenging the doors of time,

It’s a kind of magic,

The waiting seems eternity,

The day will dawn of sanity,

Is this a kind of magic,

(It’s a kind of magic)

There can be only one,

This rage that lasts a thousand years

Will soon be done,

This flame that burns inside of me,

I’m hearing secret harmonies

It’s a kind of magic,

The bell that rings inside your mind,

Is challenging the doors of time,

It’s a kind of magic,

It’s a kind of magic,

This rage that lasts a thousand years,

Will soon be will soon be,

Will soon be done,

This is (this is) a kind (a kind) of magic (yeah),

There can be only one one one one,

This rage that lasts a thousand years,

Will soon be done, done,

Magic, it’s a kind of magic,

It’s a kind of magic, magic, magic, magic, magic,

It’s magic,

It’s a kind of magic. Courtesy- AZ Lyrics
